The photograph on the cover was taken by my wife Michiko on the island of Torcello, near Venice, which we visited with our friend Andrea Piovan. He told me that, according to legend, Attila, emperor of the Huns, sat on this rocky seat. I did the same. Between Attila and my teaching: a whole ocean. Where one of them passed, the grass would not grow again. Where the other seeps in, flowers or cacti or nettles flourish in great profusion. And originals! Not facsimiles! Not copies! They are authentic. What differences are there between these former students? Simon McBurney, Linda Kerr Scott, Emma Thompson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Yolande Moreau, Marcello Magny, Jos Houben, Nathalie Seseña, John white, Chim Sui Man, Chan Suk-yi, Mrs Kung Siu-ling, Michael Barnfather, Martina Schwarz, Maria Öller, Christine Landon-Smith, Kathryn Hunter, Cal McCrystal, Suzanne Osten -- they are all dissimilar and marvellous in their art. No steamroller has squashed them down. No teacher has fobbed them off with a style the way apprentice pimps sell pornographic photographs, surreptitiously, on the sly. A teacher gives freedom. Nothing more. And the style? It flourishes in the poetry of each individual. Don’t touch it! It’s fragile!.
